The former housing maintenance depot off Fife Road in Larkfield is to be changed into a retail unit after councillors gave the green light.

Residents raised a petition with 369 signatures protesting about the application.

Objections stated that the privacy of properties on Burns Road would be adversely affected, there would be an over-provision of shops and litter problems.

Concerns over possible loitering and anti-social behaviour were also raised but Inverclyde Planning Board voted to approve the application.

A development at Gourock Yacht Club, meanwhile, has been put on hold until councillors visit the site.

The club wants to create a new car park with 45 spaces along with a boat marshalling area, covering a foreshore length of around 120 metres.

Club officials say granting the application would encourage more sailors of small craft to use the water and allow major dinghy events to be run from the facility. A total of 22 objections have been made by local residents, with two letters sent in support of the bid.

Objections included the effect on the environment, visual impact, road safety concerns and disruption to residents.

Points in support included benefits to the local community and tourism, as well as freeing up on-street car parking.

Council officials have recommended that the proposals for the Ashton Road premises should be refused.

The planning board has now agreed to visit the site before deciding on the application.
